When to use a gross-up calculator

  • Salary negotiation: work out the salary you need to cover your monthly budget.
  • Job offers in different states: find the salary in a high-tax state that matches your current take-home pay.
  • Employers: gross up a bonus, award or relocation payment so the employee nets the promised amount. (Supplemental wages paid separately may be withheld at the flat 22% rate instead; see the bonus tax calculator.)
  • Freelancers moving to W-2: translate the net income you're used to into a W-2 salary target.

How the gross-up is calculated

We start with a range of possible salaries and run the full 2026 paycheck engine — federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, state and local taxes, and 401(k) — narrowing the range until the take-home matches your target to the penny. That's more accurate than dividing by an estimated tax rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate gross pay from net pay?

There’s no simple formula, because taxes are progressive and some (like Social Security) have caps. The calculator runs the full paycheck calculation many times to find the exact gross that produces your target take-home pay.

What salary do I need to take home $4,000 a month?

In a no-income-tax state like Texas, a single filer needs roughly $57,000–$58,000 a year to net $4,000 a month. In a high-tax state it’s closer to $62,000–$65,000. Enter $4,000 with monthly pay frequency to see your exact number.

What is a gross-up in payroll?

A gross-up is when an employer increases a payment, such as a bonus, relocation reimbursement or award, so that the employee receives a specific net amount after taxes. Employers use the same calculation as this tool.

Why is the gross-up more than "net ÷ (1 − tax rate)"?

Because the extra gross pay is itself taxed, at your marginal rate rather than your average rate. The calculator accounts for every bracket and cap.
