The hourly to salary formula

Annual salary = Hourly wage × Hours per week × Weeks per year

Full-time work is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. If you take unpaid time off, reduce the weeks. Two unpaid weeks makes it 2,000 hours.

Comparing an hourly job with a salaried offer

When you compare an hourly role with a salaried one, line up more than the base pay:

  • Overtime: hourly non-exempt workers earn 1.5× after 40 hours. Exempt salaried workers don't. Starting in 2025, overtime premiums also get a federal tax deduction.
  • Paid time off: salaried jobs usually pay holidays and vacation. Hourly jobs may not.
  • Benefits: employer health contributions and 401(k) matches can be worth 10–30% of base pay.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hourly pay to a yearly salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by hours per week and then by weeks per year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks, that’s hourly × 2,080. For example, $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year.

How much is $20 an hour per year?

$20 × 2,080 = $41,600 a year before taxes, or $3,466.67 a month. See $20 an hour after taxes.

Quick mental math for hourly to salary?

Double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $25/hour ≈ $50,000 a year. The exact figure ($52,000) is a bit higher because a year has 2,080 work hours, not 2,000.

Does this include overtime?

No. It uses straight-time hours. If you regularly work overtime, use the overtime calculator or the hourly paycheck calculator, which handle 1.5× pay and the 2026 overtime deduction.
