Bi-Weekly vs. Semi-Monthly Pay: Which Gives You More per Paycheck?

26 paychecks or 24? How pay frequency changes each check, budgeting, overtime and the "three-paycheck months".

"Bi-weekly" and "semi-monthly" sound the same but aren't. One gives you 26 paychecks a year, the other 24. Your annual pay is identical. What changes is the size of each check, how they line up with your bills, and how overtime shows up.

The difference

  • Bi-weekly: every other week, usually on the same weekday. 26 paychecks a year (occasionally 27).
  • Semi-monthly: twice a month on set dates, often the 15th and last day. 24 paychecks a year.

Side-by-side: $65,000 salary

Weekly52$1,250.00$1,046.30$54,408
Bi-weekly26$2,500.00$2,092.60$54,408
Semi-monthly24$2,708.33$2,266.98$54,408
Monthly12$5,416.67$4,533.96$54,408

Each semi-monthly check is $174.38 bigger than a bi-weekly check, but bi-weekly workers get two more checks, so the yearly total is the same.

The "three-paycheck months"

With 26 bi-weekly paychecks, two months a year have three paydays. If you budget around two paychecks a month, those extra checks ($2,092.60 each in the example) can go straight to savings, debt or an emergency fund, without touching your normal budget.

Budgeting tips

  • Semi-monthly: pay rent and the larger bills from one check, everything else from the other.
  • Bi-weekly: budget monthly expenses from two checks (that's $4,185.20 here), and treat the third checks as a bonus.
  • Either way: monthly take-home is annual net ÷ 12 ($4,533.96 here), not "check × 2".

Overtime and hourly workers

Overtime is based on 40 hours per workweek. Bi-weekly periods contain exactly two workweeks, so overtime is easy to track. Semi-monthly periods split weeks across pay periods, so overtime from one week can show up in the next check. Hourly workers are therefore more often paid weekly or bi-weekly. See the hourly paycheck calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is bi-weekly or semi-monthly pay better?

Neither pays more per year. Semi-monthly gives bigger, predictable checks that line up with monthly bills. Bi-weekly gives two "bonus" three-paycheck months a year. Choose based on how you budget.

Which months have three paychecks in 2026?

It depends on your first payday. If you were paid Friday, January 2, 2026, your three-paycheck months are January and July. If your first payday was Friday, January 9, 2026, they’re May and October. Check your employer’s payroll calendar.

Does pay frequency change how much tax I pay?

No. Your annual tax is the same. Withholding tables are designed so each frequency withholds about the same total over the year.
